Fulshear Creek Crossing
Scarecrow Festival, 2010
The First Annual, or Inaugural, Fulshear Creek Crossing, Scarecrow Festival was a fabulous family event. Twenty-two artists created scarecrows for a contest and placed them on the hill by the lodge. Nearby, the lake glistened and reflected the activities throughout the day, which included: the Flag presentation by Girl Scout Troop #3974, Music (by Huggins Elementary, Seven Lakes High School, Simonton Christian Academy, Riverbend Baptist Choir), Wine Stomping Championship Rounds, Professional Jugglers, Scarecrows on Stilts, children's activities, and food vendors. The special day culminated in a feast put on by Ray's Grille and an award ceremony for the third place, second place and finally, first place Scarecrows. In third place, was "Shrek", certainly a children's favorite. In second place, was "Tippy". And, in first place was "Edward Scissor-Crow" by Catherine Watson.
The making of "Edward Scissor-Crow" was a nearly month-long process that started with creating a supportive armature. This first layer consisted of recycled grocery bags covered by fiber, papier-mache' and plaster. After curing for a week, the form was then sawed at the leg joints. Rope was added at strategic places to allow for the legs to be semi-pose-able. A layer of hay and wire was added to flesh out the form. Then, the body was covered in fabric. As "Edward Scissor-Crow" is not a real man, tights were the perfect solution for the legs. After the fabric was applied, then the entire body, arms, legs, back, feet, and head was covered in corn husks (each piece being individually placed and glued. Finally, a paint finish and embellishment were in order. the hands were adorned with blades created of painters tape and wire then painted. For the most part, the work was created of recycled materials from the artist's studio. She did have to purchase a few supplies, such as the hay, craft items and glue, corn husks, cornstalks and so forth. The scarecrow was hung on a 4 by 4 and surrounded with hay, cornstalks and decorative scenery including a large painting created on a support also created of plaster and fiber. To be in keeping with the theme, a large topiary was constructed for the scissors to rest upon.
Challenged by a theme to create a movie star or connect to a movie, Catherine chose the theme from the movie: Edward Scissorhands because of the internal message of acceptance. She feels that each art piece has the potential for making a positive difference in someone's life, so a positive internal message was important. It is fitting that the people of Fulshear embrace the plurality of the community, especially at this time of rapid growth. It was wonderful to see the support of so many people in the community and for the Mayor to be present for the events of the day and the dinner and award ceremony. Everyone is looking forward to the events next year already.
